Aperture is a dating app for people who’d rather not hand their whole life to every stranger who swipes past. Strangers get a glimpse. The rest opens one stage at a time, and only as far as you both want to go.
Why we built Aperture
On most apps, your entire profile — your job, your bio, your travels, every photo — goes to everyone who swipes past. Then a match opens a chat and leaves you to it: a week of “hey” and half-replies until it quietly fizzles out.
We wanted the opposite. Aperture is named for the part of a camera that opens one stop at a time, letting in only as much light as you choose. Your profile works the same way: you decide what each stage shares, and each next step opens only when you both want it.
Four stages
Every connection on Aperture moves through four stages. Each one opens a little more, and only when it’s mutual.
- Glimpse — what strangers see: a photo, a few words, and the basics that matter. Saying yes only means you’re curious.
- Match — more photos, more bio, and Reveals: questions about you, from the very basic to the very intimate, shared at the stage you choose. Trade a few answers and decide if you want a real conversation.
- Date Zero — your first conversation, on the calendar. Thirty minutes, in real time, with both of you actually there.
- Connected — after Date Zero, you each privately choose what you’re open to: open chat, a voice or video call inside the app, meeting in person, or a microcommitment. Only what you both chose opens.
What we believe
A few principles shape every decision we make about the product:
- Your profile isn’t for everyone. Strangers get the basics. The rest is for people you’ve matched with, at the stage you choose.
- Reveals are mutual. Answers unlock for both people at the same moment. Nobody gets to read everything about you without sharing anything back.
- Nobody has to stick their neck out. Next steps are chosen privately. If one of you wants more than the other, you meet where you overlap — and nobody’s left exposed.
- Your number stays yours. Calls happen inside the app, so moving to a call never means handing your phone number to someone you’ve barely met.
- One plan, everything included. We’re a tiny company with low overhead, so there’s one plan, every feature, and plenty of time to try it first. We’ll never charge you to be seen.
Where we are
Aperture is opening city by city, each one as it reaches the critical mass that makes good matches possible. Build your profile before your city opens and you’ll come in as a Founder, with perks we’re still putting together — including the same small monthly fee for life.
